Volunteer
Our volunteers are like snowflakes—no two are alike. We accept the help of volunteers however we can get it, but we do work within three models: the Live-In, the Part-Timer, and the Part-Time Live-In.
Live-In
We invite all Workers able and willing to commit at least 6 months to Su Casa to consider the Big Kahuna of Su Casa volunteerism: the full-time live-in position (a.k.a. Su Casa Staff). Since these volunteers have no outside jobs they are provided for in the same way as the guests: community food, hygiene supplies, medicine, cookware, linens (you get the idea) are all a part of the job. Along with all of the donated food he or she can eat, Staff Members receive an $80/month stipend. Staff Members have the opportunity to give of themselves by taking on great responsibilities in the positions of Executive Director, House Director, Volunteer Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Maintenance Supervisor, Food and Donations Manager, etc.
Part-Time
It’s difficult to describe the role of our beloved Part-timers. Depending on the interests, abilities, and availability of the individual, a Part-time Volunteer can take many forms. Some choose to donate time every week as a house manager or care-provider for our kids, while others come over only to help us with specific projects. Some live in the neighborhood, while others travel from the suburbs or from Indiana to be with us. Good natured and giving individuals who wish to volunteer are given an application which includes a nice, long list of the services and work that Su Casa needs. The Volunteer Coordinator then works with that volunteer to figure out how he or she will fit and how best to balance what the volunteer can give with what the Community lacks.
Part-Time Live-In
A Resident Volunteer is the adventurous individual who wants to walk the line between volunteer and staff member. Recent Resident Volunteers have included employees of a local Head Start program and Access Living as well as retired Religious. By moving in and sharing our day-to-day ups and downs, he or she is privy to the potent taste of community life. In return for the room and board provided, the volunteer gives us some time and some rent which the interested party can arrange with our Executive Director. The deeper contribution of presence, support and perspective are really what we’re after.
